[Rumour] Nvidia Geforce GTX 480 TDP at 275W http://feedsanywhere.com/go?id=2131253%26feed=1 | VR-Zone News

Initially expected to be rated at ~220W, Fermi/GF100's troubled development meant rumours of as high as 280W was circulating around the internet by the time it was demonstrated at CES 2010. Of course, Nvidia denied these rumours.

Following further information and leaks during Cebit 2010, against Nvidia's precautions, a TDP of close to 300W for the GTX 480 became more widespread.

How would you change Nokia's N900? http://feedsanywhere.com/go?id=2131167%26feed=1 | Engadget - www.engadget.com

Maemo 5 didn't stand on its own for long before being mashed together with Intel's Moblin, but Nokia's N900 still stands as one of the best handhelds for web browsing. It's hardly the world-beater that Nokia (may have) hoped it to be, but that's not because the internals aren't impressive. We're guessing that only a handful of you made the effort to fork over wads of cash in order to pick an unlocked version up, but if you did, you no doubt have some opinions post-purchase. Is the display living up to your expectations? Are you and Maemo getting along alright? How's that keyboard? We're eager to know how you'd tweak the N900 if you had the keys to the design kingdom, and with MeeGo already being announced, we're forbidding you from suggesting the obvious. Or you can, but we'll be plugging our ears, closing our eyes and humming annoyingly.

GDC: Daglow: The Real Console War Is On Wall Street http://feedsanywhere.com/go?id=2131130%26feed=1 | Gamasutra News

Most people measure the console wars by hardware unit sales, but although those numbers can be indicative of a console's success, that's not where the real console war is taking place, independent design consultant Don Daglow said at GDC on Friday. "The real war is the war on Wall Street," he said. That's where CEOs are judged, and those CEOs are expected to grow their business year after year, or else that stock price will ...

E-Book Readers: Will Secondary Features Win Consumers' Hearts Or Leave Them Cold? http://feedsanywhere.com/go?id=2131103%26feed=1 | TechCrunch

How many e-book readers do you think are out there right now for you to choose from? If you did a little digging, I bet you’d find 50 or so. Maybe 10 really worth checking out. But right now is a bit of a weird period in e-reader history. The Kindle cemented e-readers in the consumer headspace, catapulting them from weirdo alternative technology to mainstream gadget. That’s what the iPad threatens to do with tablets — we’ll see about that. But the Kindle and the iPad are two important data points in the current e-reader wars; the question, upon the answer of which depends the success of many a device, is whether “bonus” features like second screens and weird form factors in e-readers will be enough to differentiate them from the high-profile devices pressing them on both flanks?

See, the vast majority of e-readers were designed as a response to the Kindle, not to tablet computers, which may or may not obsolete e-readers altogether. It’s a bad situation: the whole time you’re improving your competitor’s product, someone else is skipping your entire device class on the grounds that it will be made ridiculous by their awesome gadget. Some of the special features developed to combat the Kindle will stay, and some won’t live to see their own first birthday.

Digg Says Yes To NoSQL Cassandra DB, Bye To MySQL http://feedsanywhere.com/go?id=2131102%26feed=1 | Slashdot

donadony writes "After twitter, now it's Digg who's decided to replace MySQL and most of their infrastructure components and move away from LAMP to another architecture called NoSQL that is based in Casandra, an open source project that develops a highly scalable second-generation distributed database. Cassandra was open sourced by Facebook in 2008 and is licensed under the Apache License. The reason for this move, as explained by Digg, is the increasing difficulty of building a high-performance, write-intensive application on a data set that is growing quickly, with no end in sight. This growth has forced them into horizontal and vertical partitioning strategies that have eliminated most of the value of a relational database, while still incurring all the overhead."

Metroid: Other M Hands-on Impressions http://feedsanywhere.com/go?id=2131055%26feed=1 | Shacknews Games

Metroid: Other M is an interesting test in game design. The title uses only the Wii Remote, held sideways like a NES controller, to control Samus in third-person. This is mixed with a first-person aiming mechanic using the Remote's infrared sensor.

As such, the level design is largely presented as 2D, despite being a 3D space. There is a large amount of auto-aim, putting the focus on dodging and firing back at enemies. Ninja Gaiden series veteran Team Ninja, co-developing the title with Nintendo, is the driving force behind the combat. Players will be able to dodge attacks as well as initiate flashy cinematic finishing moves on certain enemies.

Vodafone's Paid Navigation App Folds, Unable to Beat Free http://feedsanywhere.com/go?id=2131036%26feed=1 | Maximum PC all RSS Feed

In January 2009 Vodafone made what seemed like a good investment buying mapping software maker Wayfinder for about $30 million. A year later it's looking like a pretty awful deal in the wake of free navigation solutions from both Google and Nokia. Facing the inevitable, Vodafone is closing Wayfinder saying, "We could not charge for something that others gave away for free."

Vodafone has also invested several million additional dollars in Wayfinder, so it can't be easy to walk away. It's unlikely they'd do so without being sure they could not compete with Nokia's Ovi Maps. This really isn't much of a surprise, especially considering Nokia's huge presence in Europe. Google Navigation isn't even available yet in Europe, but clearly Vodafone wasn't going to sit around and wait for two free solutions to start eating their lunch.

This may be the eventual fate of all the carrier branded navigation apps. Considering the poor quality of many of them, that might not be a bad thing. Would access to a free navigation app from Google or Nokia sway you in your next phone purchase?
